The melting point of a compound is often used to characterize a sample and to test for purity. In a synthesis experiment the melting point can be measured only after a solution has been recrystallized. The melting point is measured by clicking on the melting point apparatus and dragging the small melting point tube to the unknown flask or crystallization dish. The melting point is displayed on the melting point LED, but the text is small and could be difficult to read. When a melting point is taken, the information will be displayed in the Live Data tab in larger type. If the display reads *.** then the melting point is below 25°C. As a first-order approximation, the melting point of mixtures is simply averaged.
