The essential features of the laboratory are described as follows:

  • Back. Clicking the back button exits the Quantum laboratory and returns the user to the portal.
  • Spectrum Chart. A spectrum chart depicting the different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum is provided as a reference in the virtual laboratory. Clicking the chart will bring up an expanded view in a separate window. When the laser is out in the laboratory and turned on, arrows will be displayed on the chart showing the wavelength set on the laser in relation to the rest of the electromagnetic spectrum.
  • Live Data. Clicking on the live data tab displays to the user any relevant data pertaining to instruments being used at the time. The live data tab will be blank if no relevant data is available. Users can click on the various buttons in the live data tab to save data, manipulate the instruments, and adjust parameters. Any data saved is automatically sent to the lab notebook.
  • Stockroom. Clicking the stockroom tab brings the user to the stockroom view. While at the stockroom view, various pieces of experimental equipment in the stockroom can be brought down to the stockroom counter for later use in the laboratory. Users simply just click on categories to expand them, and click on the equipment they would like to use to place it on the stockroom counter.
  • Stockroom Counter. Equipment that was brought down to the stockroom counter can be clicked and dragged from the counter and placed on selected locations on the optics table to perform an experiment. It is up to the user to design the experiment, arrange the equipment appropriately, and set the correct values on the instruments.
  • Unknowns. Practice unknowns can be created from the Unknowns tab. If an unknown is assigned, it will also show up in this tab.
  • Lab Book. The lab book is used to record procedures and observations while performing experiments in the virtual laboratory. Detector output can also be saved to the lab book. Any data saved in the lab book is immutable and cannot be changed. All entires are timestamped. The lab book can also be exported as a PDF.
  • Presets.  The presets tab has two sections. The first, Lab Presets, are presets created by Beyond Labz that correlate to activities designed by Beyond Labz. The second, My Saved Labs, will contain a list of the users saved lab states.
  • Save Lab.  Clicking this button will add a hyperlink to the lab in its current state to the users Saved Labs. The list of saved labs can be access from the Presets tab.
  • Reset Lab. Clicking the Reset Lab button will automatically clear the laboratory and return any equipment back to their appropriate locations on the stockroom shelves. The Clear Lab button at the bottom of the tray does the same thing.
  • Optics Table. The optics table is where all the equipment is placed to perform an experiment. In an actual laboratory, an optics table is used to isolate the experiment from the vibrations of the building.
  • Bell.  The bell located on the stockroom counter is used to open the Beyond Labz support page.
